I wasn’t allowed to take protein shakes for years, my parents had all sorts of worries with regards to it affecting my health. Within nutrition, the debate over whether protein is bad for your kidneys has been a major topic for years. For those concerned about their health, it's essential to understand both sides of the argument. Let's weigh up the arguments for and against protein's impact on kidney health in a straightforward and informative format because honestly, I didn’t know where I stood myself.

Arguments FOR Protein's Negative Impact on Kidneys:

🚫 Excess Nitrogen Load: High protein diets can lead to a surplus of nitrogen in the body, which the kidneys must process and excrete as urea. Over time, this increased workload may strain the kidneys.

🚫 Increased Glomerular Pressure: Protein consumption can raise glomerular pressure in the kidneys, potentially damaging these vital filtration units.

🚫 Risk for Pre-existing Kidney Conditions: Individuals with pre-existing kidney disease may experience worsening symptoms when consuming excess protein. High protein intake could accelerate the progression of kidney dysfunction.

🚫 Dehydration Risk: High protein diets may increase water loss through urine, potentially leading to dehydration. Dehydration can strain the kidneys by making them work harder to concentrate urine.
